In a slightly strange way, jellyfish embody everything about me. Growing up, I struggled to keep swimming—pushing myself forward all the time, over-thinking, battling drug addictions and a traumatizing childhood. After some significant events and with the support of my family, I came out of my dark time and realized the value in floating. Jellyfish are the only creatures that rely on movement for the sustenance of their lives. They almost have no ability to move on their own so they depend on ocean currents and wind directions to move them on the way they’re supposed to go. When I started floating, I realized everything beautiful that was going on around me. It was already going on but I was never aware. Also similar to me, jellyfish are chill in that way yet they still have a poisonous sting. I have been the sassiest person since I was little. My mom encouraged me to be strong and independent because I grew up in India, where women are supposed to be submissive and obedient. After moving to the US, I realized that women can be powerful. The jellyfish represents me growing into the woman that I’ve always wanted to be; finding acceptance and harmony yet still being strong and deadly :)
The tattoo was done by Jerome Vorndran at Tatu Tattoo in Chicago, IL, and I had a fantastic experience all around.
